Chemical Dependency & Prescription Writing

The Department of Health and Human Services estimates there are roughly 2 million people in the U.S. with opioid use disorder. Dr. Reid Finlayson from VUMC will cover the basics of addiction and addiction treatment (with a focus on opioids) as well as management strategies for addressing acute pain in patients being treated with medication for opioid use disorder. This course will meet the 2-hour state requirement for chemical dependency and the 2-hour state requirement for DEA license holders on controlled substance prescribing.

Dr. Alistair James Reid Finlayson, native of Glasgow, Scotland, educated in Canada, graduated from the University of Western Ontario and interned at Toronto Western Hospital. He practiced family medicine in Owen Sound, Ontario, while serving for three years as Coroner and Jail Physician for Grey County. Following psychiatric training at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and in addiction medicine at Homewood Healthcare Center, he is Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and The American Board of Preventive Medicine, subspecialty in Addiction Medicine. Dr. Finlayson has held faculty positions at McMaster University, Hamilton, The University of Western Ontario, London, and the University of Ottawa. His career interests are in general psychiatry, addictions, and sexual behavior.

Dr. Finlayson joined the faculty of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2001 and holds the rank of Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He teaches and supervises medical students, residents, fellowship trainees and other healthcare professionals. His clinical focus is on the assessment and treatment of addictions and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. He is also medical director of Vanderbilt’s Comprehensive Assessment Program and a former medical director of the Vanderbilt University Faculty and Physician Wellness Program. He served on Vanderbilt Medical Center Committee for Clinical Service Excellence. His contributions have been recognized by the Hippocratic Society honor award (University of Western Ontario), the Canadian Mental Health Association, Distinguished Life Fellowship in the American Psychiatric Association and Distinguished Fellowship in the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
